A Divine Mystery in Suffering

Wednesday, September 17th, 2008

Dear family & friends,
It’s been a couple of months since you’ve heard from us, thanks to
those of you who’ve been asking about my health, this email includes
a report for you. Paul and I are adjusting to being without any of
our birth children who are now all grown and living in different
places (USA & Australia). See our family website if you want to know
more. We miss them. We are counting down the days until Zac &
Michelle’s wedding on October 24th in California.

I had tests recently and results weren’t as good as we’d hoped. The
tumour has grown, but I continue to trust God for each day and I am
acutely aware that it is God who is in control. I am going to go to
Malaysia for another 12 days of intensive treatment at the
alternative health clinic from Sept 28th, so I am sure that will help
me also. I am not discouraged and have complete peace as I trust God
for my future. I am doing what I know I can do and leaving the rest
to God. I know that being alive now is a miracle, as according to the
doctors I should have died more than a year ago. There is a
possibility that I may have to have surgery on my left kidney, which
is dying as a result of the tumour squeezing around the renal aorta
but I am hoping that won’t be necessary.
Today I read and identified with words from ‘Streams in the Desert’:
“There is a divine mystery in suffering, one that has a strange and
supernatural power and has never been completely understood by human
reason. When a person who suffers reaches a point where he can be
calm and carefree, inwardly smiling at the suffering and no longer
asking God to be delivered from it, then the suffering has
accomplished its blessed ministry.” I relate to that as I feel at
peace just to trust God. I know that God causes all things to work
for good to those who love Him and are called according to His
purpose and I am content with that. I don’t think about what hard
things might be in store for me, it is so much more fun to remain
positive, to choose to continue to trust that God knows what is ahead &
so I don’t need to. It saves a lot of fretting. Paul is coming with
me to Malaysia to keep me company, and I am so glad he is!
Thanks for praying and for caring for us. Those in California or
Australia we hope to see you soon. Our mobile in Oz is 0433444723 so
call us, we’ll be there after November 2nd.
We’ll stay in touch,
Paul & Penny
